about

Introducing Warp and Weft, the product of a two year trans-atlantic collaboration between the UK-based guitarist, David Cooper Orton ("lyrical and groovacious" - Guitar Player magazine) and Monterey, California, USA based bassist Steve Uccello (Steve's music was described as "soothing and sensual, yet musically demanding and virtuous" by John Golsby, and "filled with cool and unique sounds, textures, and musical ideas" by Bryan Beller)

Steve and David met at the Y2KX International Live Looping Festival in Santa Cruz in 2010. The link between them was Nat Grant, a composer/percussionist from Australia. All three had peformed at the previous year's looping festival. Steve and Nat subsequently recorded the sung duo CD, "Melbourne, Monterey". Whilst discussing how much David had enjoyed that disc, Steve suggested a collaboration, and the looping took-off a-new.

The title - Warp and Weft - was chosen to reflect the compositional process. Each piece was started by Steve or David and then each took the other's work and interweaved their own musical lines, gradually stitching together the completed material.

The most complex example of this process at work is the central piece, Around The Fire. Starting with a few different compositional seeds by Steve, David presented several versions of his responses to the various sections. Steve then added-to and re-arranged these sketches until the basic shape was established. At this point, Nat was invited to add some percussive and textural details, and finally the composition (and the circle!) was complete.

The recordings were mastered by bassist/composer/sound designer Jeff Schmidt (winner of the 2005 Bass Extremes International Solo Bass competition). Cover photograph by David, showing part of the Severn Bridge. This bridge connects England and Wales, and is thus emblematic of any and all methods of spanning and connecting across distances. It also looks like some sort of massive stringed instrument, which (with just a small flight of the imagination) might generate the breadth of sound we have produced on Warp and Weft.
